It was so long ago I don't really remember, it did drain my savings though. Seems like it was in the range of six cows.

Edit:

I've been told I remembered the old movie shown in Seminary classes wrong. I meant it was in the range of eight cows.

My wife's engagement ring + wedding ring combo (platinum, w/ diamond) was ~$4,000.

My oldest brother was (and still is) a jewelry salesman. He got the ring for us as a gift, so I paid a grand total of $0 for it.

However, you get what you pay for. A few years ago, one of the brackets broke and the jewel was lost. We sifted through the vacuum cleaner and never found it. So now my wife has a really cheap $2 ring. It works!

It's after the fact, but my wife and I have discussed that we wish we had bought a cheaper engagement ring and then upgraded for something nicer for our 10 year anniversary.

Engagement and Wedding ring are the same for us. $900. I was in school and had to take out a student loan for it :)

I always felt that being obsessed with the ring took away from the importance of the marriage. I personally think the ring is only a symbol and nothing else.

I have a simple ring because it is what my husband could afford. He did not take out any loans and paid cash. I love that he knows when and what to spend our money on and that he refrains from spending it on frivolous items when simple does us just fine (I'm not talking about just wedding rings here either). It is a trait that has kept us out of debt, other than our mortgage, for our entire marriage. I love him for it.

We were the same, Jillicious. Dh could not afford to spend a lot on a ring. I wore simple jewelry anyway. It was a gold band with 1 small stone. I actually picked it out. He bought it. It worked for me until pregnancy swelled my hands. I had to have it cut off. Never replaced it.

Can't say that had any effect of on how we managed debt since then, though.
