My very first wet dream woke me up right as I climaxed. I was a very innocent 13 year-old with no experience with masturbation or porn and woke up sticky and surprised--having ejaculated dreaming about beautiful young single woman in my ward. 30 years later having moved away and back we're in the same ward again. In all the years following the first one, I almost never woke up until after orgasm and almost never remember an erotic dream. I just woke up having come in my underwear. During and after my mission, while abstaining from masturbation and any other outlet, I had wet dreams all the time and never had erotic dreams. Of course, I would never tell this woman that I had an erotic dream about her 30+ years ago, but if I were the inspiration for an innocent orgasm I think I'd be flattered to know. Oh well.

A lot of you guys mentioned not being told anything about wet dreams. Do you wish your parents had talked to you about them beforehand? Do you feel you would have been less embarrassed if they had?

Have you taught your sons or daughters about wet dreams?

I taught my son about wet dreams in preparation for puberty. I wanted him to know what to expect and not be freaked out by it all. I think it's helped him talk more openly about it.

I don't see wet dreams as much different than a girl getting her period. Except periods don't give orgasms darn it.

Cramps or O? It's the same thing isn't it?

I think it would have been helpful to know before hand. I have not told my sons about this. I only have one that would still qualify, so I'll have to sit him down and talk to him.

I honesty don’t remember how I felt about my first wet dream. I’m sure I enjoyed it, I always did but I don’t know how I felt about it. I know no one ever talked to me about it but I learned about it from Elder Packer’s To Young Men Only talk. I’d have heard that when I was twelve but I don’t know if that was before or after my first wet dream.

I didn’t talk to my sons personally about wet dreams but our school district has maturation discussion meetings for both boys and girls. The girls learn about their periods etc. while the boys learn about the male reproductive system including wet dreams. The parents can attend these meetings which I did.

Re: KSS's question about was I taught about wet dreams prior? . . . I remember learning a little about wet dreams so when it happened the first time, it wasn't a huge surprise and no guilt . . . for the most part I slept through them and woke up sticky and relaxed. Because I was pretty innocent and unfamiliar with sex I didn't usually have erotic dreams accompanying them either.

Anyway, the REAL frustration is waking up just seconds before impending orgasm. No one prepares you for THAT! I knew nocturnal omissions were normal and nothing to feel guilty about. I had all the internalized guilt and certainty that masturbation was sinful so I had a many sleepless nights because I kept waking up JUST before I could come and never got the release my body craved. I would hold out and not do it . . . until several days of tension, physical discomfort, insomnia and raw horniness overcame me and I masturbated. Then I felt guilty . . . repented and recommitted to not giving in to this pernicious sin . . . abstained, and was so preoccupied, I could rarely sleep deeply enough for a wet dream. . . . AND thus began anew the cycle. I wish they could announce from the pulpit that: we embrace the law of chastity and also desire all our members to be healthy and well-adjusted people . . . with that in mind . . . when necessary and at their own discretion, frustrated people should discretely drain their little factories without the use of porn or other people as necessary if/when the wet dream outlet is not working. Without porn or other people being involved, it ceases to be a sexual thing in large measure and is more like a health routine.

From what I hear and observe, I THINK there is less of focus on all this in the youth lessons and interviews.

Anyway, adolescent boys need to be prepared for the days they DON'T have wet dreams. Therein lies the trauma.

Until I was in the MTC, I didn’t have many wet dreams. Maybe one or two a year is all. Vivid sexual dreams accompanied them. I got a lot of release from kissing girls when I was masturbation free before my mission thinking back. I guess my libido was very geared up by the time I hit the MTC and responded with wet dreams as a release source. Mercifully, I didn’t remember many dreams.

Why mercifully? I know it can be ... disconcerting(?) to have sexual dreams when you’re single — and they can be quite weird for virgins without experience for the subconscious to work with. I used to feel guilty and embarrassed about them, but I’ve felt less so over the years, I think, as I’ve come to accept that I’m not responsible for them. It’s a natural thing my body does, mostly outside my control. I’ve tried to shift my mindset from resisting it and trying to not feel pleasure when it happens, to just accepting and enjoying the good feelings.

(When I say wet dreams are mostly outside my control, I am referring to masturbation and sex reducing the likelihood of a wet dream. Also, I have noticed that for me, taking mens’ multivitamins with vitamins that “support prostate health”, or thinking a lot about sex / being aroused before I go to bed, will increase the likelihood of a wet dream.)

It was merciful not to remember the dreams because thinking about the girls I left behind was enough of a distraction, a very pleasant one. To pour fuel on the fire with remembered, vivid sexual dreams about my friends could well have made me into a zombie. I enjoyed my mission a lot, even much of the MTC. I’m glad that I wasn’t walking around like a zombie for part of it. I’ve enjoyed my life a lot since. I have a ton of best two years, and only a couple of tough years. I’ve been blessed.

I am certain that I had no wet dreams while on my mission. I had one exercise induced orgasm near the end of my mission so I ejaculated only once in my entire mission. I don’t remember how long I went before or after my mission without a wet dream. At that time of my life I was probably averaging one ejaculation per year. Which of course is why I had the testicle pain that I have talked about in other threads. That’s not nearly enough ejaculations for a healthy prostate. For some unknown reason my reproductive system did not work in the way Elder Packer said it would.

I will say however that I loved wet dreams when I had them. They were often associated with an intense sexual dream. I usually woke up during them and was able to fully enjoy the orgasm. Now days I still have intense sexual dreams but without orgasm. I guess that my prostate is no longer congested enough to release itself during a dream.
